Short Game Precision

Short Game Precision

Golf is a difficult game due to the level of precision required. You are hitting a tiny ball into a small cup that is hundreds of yards of away from you. The path to that hole is lined with hazards and obstacles. You have to use different swings on each hole, a drive, an approach, short game shot, and a putting stroke.
There is a reason most players are so inconsistent and that is the margin of error between a good shot and a bad shot. Think about the physics of the game for a second. You are trying to not only hit the ball accurately, but with distance. To achieve that distance you have to generate club head speed. Most of the speed is due to the wide arc from the club and the flexibility of the shaft. Your arms are moving relatively slowly compared to the 100 mph your clubhead is moving at impact.

With that much speed even a slightly open or closed club face is going to force the ball to travel offline. That is why a minor difference in how open or closed the face of your club is at impact will result in a slice one shot and a hook the next. Few other activities require the precision a golf shot does.

Another difficulty with golf is that you initiate the action. The golf ball just sits there, waiting for you to make your move. There are no opponents that you have to overcome, only yourself and the golf course. Other sports are re-active. In baseball, hitters are trying to make contact with a ball that is being thrown across the plate. In basketball you are trying to get past defenders and near the basket.
That is why in golf you must establish a routine and stick with it. It’s a set of steps that gets your mind ready and your body prepared to hit the shot required. All good players follow the same exact steps before striking the ball.
